Everything you need to know about Contact Improvisation and Denver Contact Improv.

What is Contact Improvisation?

Contact Improvisation is a movement practice and relational dance form rooted in listening, touch, weight-sharing, improvisation, and embodied awareness. It invites people to explore movement, creativity, connection, and presence through shared physical dialogue.

Do I need dance experience?

No experience is necessary. Our Denver Contact Improv classes are beginner friendly and welcome movers of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels.

What happens at a Contact Improv jam?

A jam is an open movement space where people practice improvisational movement together. Some people dance continuously, others rest, observe, or move in and out of the space. Jams can include silence, live music, guided scores, and community connection.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in. Long sleeves and pants are often recommended to support sliding and skin comfort while dancing.

Is Contact Improvisation safe?

We strive to create a culture of consent, listening, communication, and care. Participants are always encouraged to move at their own pace, honor boundaries, and prioritize personal and collective safety.

Is Contact Improv only for dancers?

Not at all. Many people come to Contact Improvisation for community, creativity, healing, embodiment, play, emotional expression, or curiosity, not because they identify as dancers.
